        Our Shanghai operation was a black hole. We poured money into the business without any tangible results.

        我们在上海的生意就是个“黑洞”，我们投了大量的资金进去，但是目前还没看到任何实质性的回报。

　　Black hole的本意是“宇宙中包括光线在内的任何东西都无法逃逸的强引力区域”，现引申为“任何只吸入而不放出物质的东西”，例如：

　　Don't use my university address in Beijing. It's a black hole and nothing sent to me ever seems to arrive!

　　别把东西寄到我在北京的学校地址，那个地址就是个黑洞，通过那个地址寄给我的东西从来没有寄到的。

　　类似的例子还有：

　　It will be a quantum leapin development if we start living on Mars.

　　如果我们能去火星居住的话，那真的是一个巨大的突破。

　　Quantum leap本来是一个物理名词，意为”量子跃进“，现引申为”巨变、飞跃“。

　　If John is going to start walking to work, that is a paradigm shiftin his habits. He has never taken any exercise in his life!

　　如果约翰开始走着去上班了，那可真是一个大变化，他从来不做任何运动的！

　　Paradigm shift本意是指“人们思维方式的改变或变革”，例如：

　　The personal computer and the internet have changed both personal and business environments so they are catalysts for a paradigm shift.

　　个人电脑和网络改变了人与人之间的交往，也改变了商业环境，所以可以说它们是人们思维方式变革的催化剂。
